During my research for fiberglass wind generator blades I came across Windmax blades. After researching their properties I became quite excited. High tip speed ratio (TSR), and a low start up speed, plus you can't scoff at the cost.

The windmax blades are available in sizes from 6.8 feet all the way up to 20 feet. They're great upgrade blades from PVC blades as they start at a size just larger than my recommended maximum size for PVC blades. All of this is great, but why are they so great?

Well to start out with the Windmax blades have a start up speed of of 5.4MPH (2.4 m/s). If you've been using PVC blades you'll notice that these blades start producing power at much lower wind speeds (PVC usually starts up between 7-8MPH).

The other thing you'll notice about these blades is their efficiency. Wind generator blade efficiency is known as their power coefficient (cP). These blades have a power coefficient of 0.49. That means that 49% of the wind gets converted into useable energy. The maximum amount of energy that you can theoretically capture from the wind is 59.3% so Windmax isn't doing to bad. If we compare them to PVC blades whose power co-efficient is 20% - 25% at most you'll find that the Windmax blades produce twice the amount of power for a given wind speed.

If we also take a look at the tip speed ratio of the blades- which is 8 you'll find that they spin a heck of a lot faster than PVC blades as well. Blades with a high TSR spin faster than blades with a lower TSR at the same wind speed. This means that your generator motor will be spinning faster which in turn means you'll be generating more power.
