Why Use An Arbor On Your Wind Generator?

Why should you use an arbor? If you've started or thought about building a wind generator I'm sure the question of "how do I attach my blades/hub to the motor? Well, somebody had that question and developed a solution for it. Let's take a look at why an arbor is useful for your wind generator.

The picture at the left shows you what an arbor looks like. You can see at the right side of the arbor there is a screw with a nut. This part is why the arbor is so useful. Your motor doesn't really have a way for you to screw on your hub. The arbor has a nice little screw so all you need to do is unscrew it, put your hub on with a lockwasher and tighten it up.

Now that your hub is attached let's take a look at how it attaches to your motor. In the picture above you can see two little black set screws. The arbor actually slips on to the shaft of the motor and you tighten down the set screws. Make sure they are very tight (without stripping them) because you don't really want your blades to fall off one day.

Imagine how difficult it would be to mount your blades without an arbor. You'd have to figure out a way to thread the shaft or attach something threaded to the shaft. Than you'd have to make sure it's all balanced and worry whether it's going to break. The arbor doesn't cost that much and solves all of these problems for us.

One thing I need to mention is make sure the arbor you get is aluminum or stainless steel. The reason I say this is you really don't want your arbor to rust and aluminum or stainless steel doesn't.

Arbors come in a variety of sizes. They are measured by the shaft diameter. If the arbor says 5/8" arbor it means that the arbor will fit on a 5/8" shaft. I get my arbors of ebay and here's a link which takes you straight there:
