Making The Wind Generator Hub

Well, we've finished making the blades, and now we need some way to connect our blades to the motor. There's actually two things you need to do before you can attach the blades to the motor. In this step we're going to be making a hub that we can attach our blades to.

A wind generator hub is essential to your wind generator. They can be bought from ebay for around $20 or you can build your own. The hub is what the blades are attached to so we can in turn mount them to the motor so when our wind generator blades turn it will produce power.

The hub can be built from anything that's flat and round. I like scroll saw blades because they are very durable and it only takes about 15 minutes to convert one into a hub. When looking around make sure that whatever you decide to use is balanced (anything that spins fast like a saw blade is balanced). If it's not balanced you're going to have a wicked wobble which could damage something. What are you going to need in this step?

  • scroll saw blade (or anything that's circular and flat)
  • marker
  • ruler
  • drill
  • protractor (very important)

Basically, all that's required is to measure three lines that are 120 degrees apart. The video explains in great detail how to do this.

Although I didn't show it in the video I've also painted the blade white mostly so it looks nice. It's up to you.

Here's what the hub looks like after the holes have been drilled (I'm using 1/4" bolts so they're 1/4" holes).
