Do You Need Permits?
Now comes our favorite part of building a wind generator. Do you need permits? Are you allowed to put a wind generator up in your municipality? These questions are very easily answered and the good news is that the people you will be in contact with actually want to help you (which is great for us).
The first question we need answered is whether you're allowed to put up a wind generator in your area. If you live in a rural area you should be ok, but you should double check.
If you live in an urban area you might run into a little bit of trouble. It seems people have been complaining that there are health hazards associated with low frequency noise of wind turbines so there are laws being passed prohibiting them from being build anywhere near residential areas. If you call up your city and they say no... relax!! you can still put up a vertical wind turbine (the how to's are at a link on the left side.)
Alright, now that we know whether we're allowed to put a wind generator up we need to ask what types of permits we'll need if any. This usually involves going into city hall to the building section and asking them what the by-laws are for building wind generators. Make sure you ask about both horizontal (traditional) and vertical axis wind generators. If you're not allowed to put up a horizontal wind turbine you should be able to put up a vertical axis one because there really haven't been any laws passed about them yet.
